Description:

This most interesting and entertaining film tells the story of the so called DDR-Kinder of Namibia. DDR is the German acronym of the former German Democratic Republic that was swept away in an public upheaval 1989. Who are the Ossis of Namibia? Having been divided into West Germany and East Germany, two general nicknames had been used in either population, naming the Germans in West Germany as Wessis and those in the East as Ossis.

During the armed conflict in Northern Namibia and Angola, orphans and children of SWAPO members were sent to East Germany to be raised and educated there. Rare archive footage illustrates their arrival in 1979 and life at an East German boarding school up to the day they were forced to return to their Namibian homeland.

Politicians, teachers, and foster parents comment on the political background at that time. Today, they are trying to find their own identity between a modern independent Namibia and a former communist East Germany.
