About: Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2024

This is the 44th edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide, and as ever we've extensively revised and updated it. In the process we've been reminded of one of the intentions of the guide's founders, John and Erica Platter, to not merely sit in judgement over the wines being reviewed, but to understand and convey, via the tasting notes and winery overview, the winegrower's intention and how it relates to the soil, climate and terrain of the vine, and ultimately to the wine in the glass. We've also not deviated from the original goal of tasting, rating and describing as many as possible South African-made wines, available locally and overseas during the currency of the book. That said, participation in the guide remains voluntary, and a limited number of producers, for a variety of reasons, elect not to enter wines or opt to be omitted entirely. Other wineries are not yet ready to be featured, and we look forward to including them next time. In closing, it's worth noting that our ratings are the considered opinion of wine experts who understand the responsibility of giving a rating to a product as changeable as wine. Even so, because of the subjective element associated with wine assessment, we recommend you view our rankings as adjuncts to the tasting notes rather than oracular pronouncements.
