About: Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021

The cover colour of this, the 41st edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021, was voted for by followers on social media who saw its vivid green hue as a sign of hope and revival after arguably the most challenging year of their lives. The pandemic caused severe difficulties for our logistics and tasting teams, too, and for the wine producers entering wines for review, even for the couriers doing their rounds of tasting-sample delivery. In an already topsy-turvy year, traditional Cape winter storms, absent the past few drought seasons, returned in force, prompting some deliveries to be hastily rescheduled and casting a literal pall on the gloomy situation.

The response from all of my colleagues to the unprecedented and ever-changing circumstance has been simply magnificent, and I can't thank them enough for their creativity, patience, flexibility and sheer effort in producing a successful Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021 against the odds. I'd like to take this opportunity to recognise their contribution. Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021 itself, as ever, has been fully revised, with a refreshed overview of industry trends and directions; updated tasting notes for the wines, brandies, husk spirits and sherry-style wines listed in the A-Z directory; news bulletins about the wineries and winemakers (and distilleries and distillers) featured in the A-Z, along with general information about the cellars, vineyards and amenities available to visitors.

As adjuncts to the latter, the wineland maps have also been fully updated, along with the quick-lookup tables which provide key visitor information about the wineries of a particular area. For the benefit of those setting out on day trips or longer self-drive excursions, we continue to publish the 3-word addresses created by the innovative team at WinWords, whose aim is to make navigation faster, easier and more accurate by precisely locating any person or object on the planet. Look for the S icon among the contact details of the producer listing in the A-Z, and simply type (or speak) the three words into the W3W app on your phone.
