This booklet is a great introduction to the vast rock painting collection at the Brandberg, amongst them being the famous White Lady.

The Brandberg stands alone, towering over a desolate landscape in the north-western part of the Namib Desert. At 2646 meters, it is the highest mountain in Namibia. Its dimensions of 30 km long and 25 km wide make it almost circular in shape.

The mountain is composed of a single mass of granite created 120 million years ago, a time of tremendous geological upheaval in the earth's history.

At birth this vast granite mound was covered by hot, flowing magma, spewed from the bowels of the earth, boiling over the surface and filling the great cracks and crevices in the granite.

s it cooled it became a solid outer crust covering the granite mound beneath. With the passing millennia the magma eroded away and eventually exposed the underlying granite.

Where the magma had flowed into deep cracks and over the uneven surfaces of the mountain its erosion had left huge boulders of granite on the slopes and this is what created the unique Brandberg landscape that we see today. […]
