About: The Merit Medal for Combatants in German South West Africa 1892-1918

The Merit Medal for Combatants in German South West Africa 1892-1918 places on record the awarding of medals by the German Military Authorities to members of the Native population in the former colony of German South West Africa. These members of the Native population were in the military service in the Colonial Troops and fought integrally with the Colonial Troops during the various campaigns within the colony. The Merit Medal for Combatants in German South West Africa 1892-1918 is not a book on the history of or the politics of their service in the former colony but deals rather specifically with the medal awarded to these members of the Native population as from 1892 to 1918 when the country ceased to be a German colony. One of the least known and also the most fascinating fact regarding the awarding of orders, decorations and medals in the colony of German South West Africa, was that persons of the local population were also awarded medals for their service in the 'Kaiserliche Schutztruppe für Deutsch-Südwestafrika' (Imperial colonial troops for German South West Africa). The service for which they were rewarded with medals was for their participation as members or as auxiliary members of the colonial troops in the colony and were awarded the 'Kriegerverdienstmedaille' (Merit Medal for Combatants) for bravery or merit in the field.
