Description:

Mapstudio's Visitor's Guide & Atlas Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a new, nicley photographed guide to a somewhat neglected destination, literaturewise. This interesting mix of guide and atlas provides accommodation and facility options, contact details, climate charts, an overview map of the region, layout of the main camp sites, more than 100 images and descriptions of the fauna and flora you will encounter there. Furtheron there are many handy hints and tips, distance chart and travelling times, gate times, 4WD (4x4) specific information, GPS points, family friendly as well as trailer-friendly ratings and last not least the SANParks regulations. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was the first of the transfrontier zones to be created in southern Africa, and it was also among the first in the rest of the world. A fusing of two parks in April 1999, South Africa's Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and Botswana's Gemsbok National Park, the vastness of Kgalagadi makes this one of the select few conservation areas of such magnitude left on the globe. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was officially opened on 12 May 2000. To overcome the lack of sustaining water, at various points along the river beds wind pumps fill the waterholes which act as a magnet to the wildlife in the coolness of early morning and at the waning of the day. Eking out an existence on the fringes of the park are tiny, hardy communities descended from San hunter-gatherers and nomadic Khoi pastoralists. Together with South African National Parks (SANParks), they manage this transfrontier territory.
