About: Cooked in Africa

Cooked in Africa is a compilation of places, spaces, flavours and fascinations that I focused on while filming my cooking travel series 'Cooked', and it combines my three favourite things - Southern Africa, food and friends. My personal gastronomic journey began when my late gran taught me to make pancakes and during weekends and school holidays spent in the great outdoors either on the Breede River or on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape. This humble start was where I can truly say I began my love affair with cooking and wide-open spaces and my fascination with all the treasures of the sea. By the time I reached my twenties I was getting it. The more you're out there playing, the more you understand the simple truths of food and life and how everything is interconnected. And when you add into this mix the beauty of travel, of getting out there, of searching for those elements that make you tick, of making friends and memories, life is truly grand.

Today, I am still just a simple cook - I'm like any other South African, outside next to the braai, burning his fingers, cracking a can of lager and cooking for mates - but I hope that this book will inspire you to be a little more adventurous and to extend your repertoire. Without exception, we all have flops from time to time - but, like life, food is about experimenting, trying new things, making good friends and, most of all, having fun. It's all part of the process and when it works the rewards are sweet - or savoury! Just remember, those of you lucky enough to find yourselves in my marvellous part of the world have a duty not only to relish all that's on the menu but also to do so in a manner that's sustainable - I'd like my children to be able to experience my kind of life as well. For those living farther afield and far from the veld - welcome to Southern Africa: it's a Moerse Lekker Place.
