About: The Hopeless Hopes

The Hopeless Hopes is a fictional story of one man's struggle to take care of his family before and after Namibia's independence. Before independence Robert is sent at a young age to work in Otjomuise, where he becomes disillusioned about the streets being paved with gold. Taken advantage of at one place, he seeks opportunity elsewhere, and is left with dashed hopes and broken dreams. Eventually Robert joins Namibia's fight for freedom. Apartheid is overthrown in the end and he is filled with a sense of hope that not only the SWAPO elites, but also his situation will change and a prosperous future is ahead. Throughout this Robert remains desperately hopeful that he will be rewarded with a life free of poverty. Also providing a crisp and unrestricted view into a pre and post independent Namibia, the story follows a young man's journey from childhood through the changing landscape of his native land. Similar to most contemporary African literature, The Hopeless Hopes reveals disenchantment and dissention with current events. It is an exciting and sad account of one man's life that provides a perspective to the struggle of a generation of liberators.
