For thirty years South African cook Colette Comins has raised her own livestock and crops of vegetables and fruit on her family’s organic farm.
She has built a reputation as an uncompromising chef with a rare talent for paying good quality ingredients the respect they deserve by turning them into fabulous meals.
The Farm Kitchen is about good ingredients and wonderful recipes, and deciding what to cook based on what’s ripe or ready for harvesting.
There is no particular theme, just classic recipes for 130 great, wholesome and delicious dishes for any occasion.
Colette Comins came to Sterkstroom farm when her game ranger husband left the Parks Board to start a wing shooting operation.
Thrown in at the deep end, she drew on recipes her mother had taught her, found some cookbooks and began cooking for their international clients with ingredients produced on the farm.
Thirty years later Colette is an accomplished cook with dedicated fans on three continents, an astonishing culinary repertoire, and a cooking school where she shares her undeniable talent.
Food photographer and freelance journalist Russel Wasserfall first encountered the Comins family when he was sent to their farm on assignment for SA Country Life magazine.
Since then he has become, quite literally, one of the family. Now based in Cape Town, he works for a number of magazines and commercial clients as a food writer, photographer and creative director.
