Index This guide is not a textbook for zoologists - although all the facts are zoologically correct. It has been compiled to provide the general public with relevant information about our wild animals. While the emphasis is on identification, the book also contains a great deal of other relevant information about each animal's behaviour, distribution, habitat preference, reproduction, tracks, droppings, etc. All of the more common mammals that one is likely to come across are discussed and illustrated with the help of good colour photographs. In each case, two photographs (usually of the male and female) have been included and have been selected in such a way that identifying marks are visible. Distinguishing features of animals which may be confused with one another are also highlighted. The spoor illustration of each animal is of the left back paw. Some animals' front and back paws differ drastically. The front paw illustration is then marked with an "F". The teeth and horn records were taken from the latest edition of Rowland Ward's African Records of Big Game. The layout has been planned with the emphasis on user-friendliness, and the information has been set out briefly, concisely and logically. Language usage is fairly colloquial so that everybody, even children, will be able to use this book with ease. The identification key should be helpful in directing beginners to the right group of animals.
The geographical region under discussion is the area south of the Kunene and Zambezi rivers (including the Caprivi). The following symbols have been used to indicate an animal's conservation status: EN: Endangered

Otolemur crassicaudatus Description: The Greater Galago is the larger of the two galagos. In addition to its bigger size, this galago's fur is much thicker and woollier than that of the South African Galago's, especially its prominent long, thick tall. Its characteristic large eyes and bare movable ears are very prominent. As with the South African Galago, the hind legs are very long and powerful (in comparison with the forelegs), developed for huge jumps between trees. Sexual dimorphism: Males are slightly larger than females. Habitat: Mountain and coastal forest, thickets in woodland with high rainfall and also in riverine forest in drier areas. Habits: These galagos are shy, gregarious animals. They are nocturnal and are sporadically active during the night. They emerge after sunset and first groom themselves before they start feeding. The family group sleeps during the day high up in a tree in thick foliage, but during the night they forage on their own. Greater Galagos have the habit of urinating on their feet and scent-marking one another and their territory with their mammary glands. Voice: An ominous, hoarse wailing. Breeding: 2 young are born from August to September after a gestation period of 4 months. Mass: male: ±1,22 kg / female ± 1,13 kg Food: Fruit, gum, insects and also birds and reptiles.
