Description:

A land of many contrasts, Kenya straddles the equator on the eastern side of Africa. The peaks of Africa's second highest mountain, Mount Kenya, dominate the fertile central highlands, where much of the world's tea and coffee is grown. Ancient man lived beside the akes of the Great Rift, Valley. Modern man lives beside those same lakes, looking at the spectacle of two million flamingos, a blaze of pink around the water's edge. Kenya's national parks and reserves are among the world's most famous and include the rolling savannas of the Masai Mara, where the world's largest animal migration takes place each year. More than 1.2 million wildebeest follow their traditional circuit in search of new grass, crossing the Mara River with daring leaps into its swirling waters. Amboseli is well renowned, with its herds of elephants against the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro.

The country is also home to more than a thousand species of birds, many of which migrate from central Europe. The Indian Ocean forms Kenya's eastern boundary, and even the most inexperienced snorkeler will find a breathtaking variety of colourful fish and corals in sheltered lagoons. Scuba divers explore beyond the protective reef, sharing the water with dolphins, whale sharks, turtles and giant: manta rays. The people of Kenya are a heady mix stemming from ancient backgrounds. People from Arabia and Asia as well as from other parts of Africa have over time settled and mingled, forming new customs and cultures. Today's people live in the era of technological advancement, yet there are still nomadic herders, pastoralists and agriculturists who manage to adhere to their age-old traditions within this modern society.
