The 14 Dry River Beds are the result of my return to Namibia after an absence of 33 years.
I couldn’t think of a better metaphor for how I felt than the dryness that one experiences in Namibia, the drought, the constant heat and the fact that the rivers have very little water in them other than for a couple of days a year.
Otjizemba River:
The next that we come to is the "Otjizemba River". On many of these signs for a river you will see blue waves painted underneath the road signs. I found this very amusing.
First of all, the waters would be brown, but also because there hardly is ever any water in them anyway. But I used the sign on many of the pieces, the waves signifying waves of emotion that were being repeated, that I was experiencing.
In this image I am playing with the idea of original sin if you like. It references the serpent or snake in the very first image.
There's a very old man sitting in a chair I photographed in my house in London, which in turn is referenced by the photograph of a neighbour's house in London. […]
