Gobabis, a town in the east of Namibia, is home of a respectable number of authors and artists. Hélène de Kok being one, she recently released her memoirs titled Barefoot Bushdoctor: A doctor in the Kalahari. She recalls the hardships she faced as a medical and woman in this remote part of the Kalahari Desert, as well as many humorous and tragic events she was part of on her farm during a time span of four decades. Born in the Free State, South African Hélène De Kok introduces to her ancestors who came from Holland to South Africa and to later generations who where part of the Great Treck.
