Description:

In this most interesting book, Amphibians of East Africa, 194 members of the anuran family, 9 species of the gymnophonian family, their determination, habitat, and distribution, their mode of living, calls and breeding are being described. The book is arranged to be useful to anyone interested in the natural history of Africa, but it also includes details for the professional biologist. Just over two hundred (203) species are covered, consisting of 194 frog species and 9 caecilians. Each species is briefly described, along with a statement of its known habitat preferences and distribution, its advertisement call, breeding biology, and tadpole. A section of notes and a guide to key references for further reading complete each species account. We did not attempt to review taxonomic changes. The scientific names here were complete and accurate at the time of publication. Many new names are expected as more detailed work is carried out in East Africa. Studies using molecular data, such as DNA sequences, and new software capable of resolving phylogenetic relationships with large data sets will undoubtedly lead to changes in the classification and naming system, as a better understanding of the relationships between species develops.
