Description:

This study gives a thorough analysis of all the forces that influence the domestic scene, the numerous Black political parties, the White parties, the Turnhalle Constitutional Conference, the churches, whilst the international ramifications are also fully dealt with. The section on the attitudes and views of the Black political parties and churches is of great importance. This comprehensive discussion of the subject gives an understanding of the complexities of the situation. The philosophy, strength and role of SWAPO, one of the key parties in the Namibian conflict, are dealt with at length.

The author strongly argues that there can be no solution unless SWAPO - the strongest political force - plays a major role in the settlement negotiations. Special attention is given to the influence of the Black churches and the role they could play in reconciling the opposing political forces. There are also contributions by leaders of SWAPO, the National Party and other major groups. This book is essential reading for all those who want to obtain more information about a complicated situation which has become a focal point of great power rivalry, the outcome of which will influence future developments in the whole of Southern Africa.
