Der Botaniker John Manning, 1962 in Pietermaritzburg geboren, ist Absolvent der University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg und eine weltweit anerkannte fachliche Autorität sowie FRD B-zertifizierter Wissenschaftler in leitender Stellung am Compton Herbarium des South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in Kirstenbosch bei Kapstadt. Dem angesehen Institut gehört der Taxonom seit 1998 an und hat dort seine weitreichenden Kompetenz- und Forschungsfelder aufgebaut, die die Bestäubungsbiologie, Anatomie, Entwicklungsgeschichte und Artenbildung der Pflanzenwelt sowie geeignete Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Wertschätzung der Natur in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung umfassen. John Manning ist Autor und Co-Autor von über 200 wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen und etlicher botanischer Bestimmungswerke für den Bereich des südlichen Afrika, für die er, als hervorragender Pflanzenfotograf und -illustrator, selbst für das benötigte Bildmaterial sorgte. Mit dem in den USA arbeitenden Landsmann, Botaniker und Forschungspartner, Peter Goldblatt, hat John Manning über zweihundert neue Pflanzenarten, überwiegend Iridaceae und ferner Asphodelaceae, Asteraceae, Geraniaceae, Hyacinthceae, Molluginaceae, Ranunculaceae, Scrophulariaceae und Tecophilaeaeceae beschrieben. Zu ihren wichtigsten Leistungen gehören neuere molekularphylogenetische Einreihungen von Iridaceae und Hyacinthaceae. Weitere Werke entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit Colin Paterson-JonesHugh Clarke und Bruce Mackenzie. John Manning, der derzeit zu den dreißig führenden Botanikern weltweit zugerechnet wird, wurde 2005 mit der Marloth Medal der Botanical Society of South Africa, im Jahr darauf mit dem Award for Outstanding Contribution to Science, Industry and Technology und dem University of KwaZulu-Natal Convocation Award for Science and Education ausgezeichnet.
