Antje Otto, former curator of ethnography and Mannfred Goldbeck, publisher of the series Gondwana Heritage have compiled this study on the peope of the so called Eastern Zambezi Region of Namibia.

Mannfred Goldbeck  Antje Otto

[...] Due to its remoteness, the area has experienced little development during the past century. According to Harring & Odendaal the Zambezi Region is today the poorest region in Namibia and 80% of the inhabitants live without electricity. As a survival strategy, the bulk of the population is therefore forced to utilize the natural resources as effective as possible. Most rural homesteads are still constructed from locally available timber, reed and grass and traditionally made crafts supply the demand for most material needs. Sadly, the eastern Zambezi Region has the highest occurrence of HIV/AIDS in Namibia and the average life expectancy lies between 40 and 50 years. The eastern Zambezi Region can roughly be divided into Kalahari, mopane and riverine woodlands, floodplains and open water areas. The Kalahari woodlands are best represented by teak shrub- and woodland, while the mopane woodlands are represented by mopane-aristida woodland and mopane-burkea woodland; riverine woodlands are only found in the Zambezi area around Katima Mulilo. Ihe floodplains are mostly represented by the Zambezi floodplain grassland, the Linyanti swamps and dry grassland in the extreme south-west. The area is the most tropical region in Namibia and frost occurs seldom. Rains fall during the summer months between November and April, averaging between 700-750 mm in the north-east to less than 500 mm in the south. Ihe annual flooding caused by the rising river levels usually reaches its peak during the months March to May for the Zambezi while the peak for the Kwando-Mashi, measured at Kongola, is usually during July. The Linyanti swamps reach peak flooding a little while later. Besides the rivers, Lake Lyambezi is formed during rainy seasons with extremely heavy rain in the catchment area of the Mashi and Zambezi Rivers. When the Hows into the lake stop it gradually dries out and becomes a vast expanse of grasslands where people cultivate crops. Most parts of the region are covered with clay-loam soil found in the eastern Zambezi floodplains and central western parts, while sand covers the northern parts of the western areas. Although most areas have a low potential value for crop cultivation effective communal farming in the area enables the region to be virtually self-sustaining. At present there are thirteen communal conservancies and seven community forests in the area, which, through the generation of income and the possibility of ownership over natural resources, contribute considerably towards alleviating poverty. As a result of more than a century's frequent burning of huge areas during times of the year when fires have damaging effects much of the natural vegetation, especially trees, have diminished in many areas. Large parts of the eastern Zambezi Region are now bush-encroached. In 1996, one hundred and seventy buffalo were trapped and killed in a fire. Due to the increasing population and large-scale exploitation during the 1970s and 1980s there was a substantial drop in populations of lechwe, wildebeest, roan, sable, reedbuck, waterbuckand kudu until the mid-1990s.
