Why look at the skulls of mammals, you may ask? Rarely is it possible to view animals, particularly smaller species, in the wild for long enough to notice all their characteristic features. Examining a skull found in the veld or seen in a museum gives you an opportunity to determine at close range which animal it belongs to and what its feeding habits and behaviour were. And you may even uncover what caused its demise. The mammal skull is made up of about 34 bones, many of which are fused together. The skull can be divided into two main parts: the cranium (containing the braincase and rostrum) and the mandible (lower jaw). The rostrum, in turn, consists of the nasal structures and the maxilla (upper jaw) (see page 5). This short guide covers the overall shape and main bones of the skull - the teeth, mandible, rostrum, braincase and zygomatic arches (cheekbones) - and presents the vast range of shapes and sizes that help to tell one species from another. The tooth structure is particularly informative in pinpointing a species, as it shows the species-specific characteristics that different mammals have evolved for finding, biting and chewing food. Even if teeth have fallen out, the position of the sockets can help with species identification. For this reason, close-up photographs and dental formulas are given throughout Skullduggery. Quick ID guide to southern and East African mammal skulls. The eye orbits and their location in the skull, clearly visible in the skull images, offer further clues for accurate identification. [...]

WARNING: Take great care when handling any skulls you may find in the veld as individual animals may have died of disease or succumbed to poisoning.
