Nach seinem Studium war Steve Watt zunächst als Lehrer und später als Berater im Bildungsministerium des damaligen Natal tätig. In seiner Freizeit ging er seinem Interesse am Erkunden historischer Schlachtfelder aus den Zeiten der Anglo-Burischen Krieg nach und entwickelte sich zu einem anerkannten Spezialisten und Fachautoren. Zahlreiche seiner militärhistorischen Aufsätze sind im South African Military History Journal erschienen.
