Elisabeth House

Erected from 1907 to 1908, laying of corner stone on 20 October 1907, finished on 26 February 1908. Architects: Gottlieb Redecker and Willi Sander. As the stork on the roof indicates: this used to be a maternity home, which was also known as Storchennest (stork's nest). Windhoek desperately needed such an institution and on 8 April 1906 the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft decided to collect funds. This fundraising campaign was successful and when the premises were donated by the German government, Gottlieb Redecker designed the first section of the building, consisting of a huge communal living room and dining room. Four sickbays, nurses' room, kitchen, storeroom and operating theatre were situated in the southern wing. The three large arched windows provided optimal natural light conditions in the operating theatre. The Elisabeth-house, named after the Duchess Elisabeth zu Mecklenburg (her husband being Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg, the chairperson of the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft), was ceremoniously inaugurated on 24 April 1908 and came into use almost immediately. The first baby, a girl, was born on 29 April 1908. Very soon the Elisabeth House became too small and consequently sections of the veranda were closed in 1912 to create more space. During 1914-15 further additions were made according to plans drafted by Willi Sander. A canopied colonnade now linked the two buildings. The higher building with a spire roof is characteristic of the section designed by Sander. It was not only used as a maternity home. Homeless German refugees were provided shelter here during the South West Africa war campaign by South African Union in World War I (1914-1915). In 1928 the Red Cross Women's Association for Germans abroad was awarded the management and property of the Elisabeth House. Then, during World War II, the Women's Association rented the building as it had been expropriated. However, in 1954 it was donated to the Women's Association. Throughout all these years it still served as a maternity home and when it closed its doors on 29 March 1981, 12 669 babies had been delivered here.
Present-day use: Part of the Polytechnic of Namibia. Location: Storch Street

The Felsenkeller Brewery

Erected: 1901-1902; Architect: Robert Schultheiss; Background: The Felsenkeller Brewery has existed since 1901 at its present location in Tal Street. The original building was erected by the construction company Bauer and Kretschmann for the brewer Karl Bauer (1873-1915) and was inaugurated on 12 May 1902. However, the demand for beer grew with time, resulting in alternations and modifications to the buildings between 1912-1914. The company Koch & Schultheiss did the construction work. The brewery had its own spring on the premises which however ran dry over the years. The Felsenkeller Breweries became known as South West Breweries since 1920. […]
