This is the table of content to the English version of Dr. Heinrich Vedder's South West Africa in Early Times. Being the story of South West Africa up to the date of Maharero's death in 1890, by Heinrich Vedder. Frank Cass & Co Ltd, 1966.

Heinrich Vedder

It is true that South West Africa in Early Times, by Heinrich Vedder contains much historical information, but it is not a history in the scientific sense. The author's extensive knowledge of the ethnology of the native tribes, their languages, and customs assists in quickening the dry bones of their historical achievements, while folklore and tribal tradition have often been invoked in order to bridge the gaps between recent and more remote times. The original has been somewhat reduced in size for the purpose of the English edition, chiefly through the omission of numerous original letters and documents, which were fully set out in the German edition, and also through the curtailment of detailed accounts of the development and progress of individual mission stations, many of which have ceased to exist as centres of communal life. The maps and illustrations have been added, as well as a short subject index.
