Liz McGregor wuchs in KwaZulu Natal auf, besuchte die Wykeham School in Pietermaritzburg und studierte an der University of Cape Town und an der Wits University. Ihre berufliche Laufbahn als Journalistin startete sie bei führenden südafrikanischen Zeitungen wie der Sunday Times und dem Rand Daily Mail. In der Folge war Liz McGregor einige Jahre in England bei der Zeitung The Guardian als Chefredakteurin und als freiberufliche Journalistin zwei Jahre in Südkorea tätig. 2003 kehrte sie nach Südafrika zurück. Seitdem hat Liz McGregor als Co-Autorin an Sammlungen von Essays mitgearbeitet, eine Biographie und mehrere Bücher über berühmte südafrikanische Rugby-Mannschaften geschrieben.
