Pocket Guide to Birds of Southern Africa, by Burger Cillie and Ulrich Oberprieler
Pocket Guide to Birds of Southern Africa, by Burger Cillie and Ulrich Oberprieler is the ideal book for birdwatchers who do not wish to be burdened with larger and heavier books.
Introduction: This booklet has been designed to fit into a shirt pocket and be carried into the field. Its user-friendly layout and easy method of identifying a new bird make it a must, especially for people who have just started to watch birds. Most nature lovers, particularly hikers who regularly wish to consult a bird guide, will appreciate this book's light and compact design. It is the ideal book for birdwatchers who do not wish to be burdened with larger and heavier books. More than 420 of the more common birds of Southern Africa (south of the Cunene and Zambezi rivers) are listed. In order to simplify identification, the rarer birds have been omitted; it is seldom that the user will encounter a bird not included in this book. The birds have been divided into 12 logical groups according to externally visible characteristics. These are discussed in the section 'A key to the main groups of birds'. This system, which is linked to colour codes throughout the book, and the abbreviated alphabetical index in the back of the book, aid the user in quickly finding the bird to be identified. The relative size, principal habitat, food, social structure and nest type of each bird are indicated by means of symbols as described in the section 'Symbols'. The colour photographs have been chosen to illustrate the important characteristics of each bird. Smaller photographs show the differences between the adult and the juvenile, or male, female or non-breeding bird where appropriate. In accordance with current practice, the new, internationally standardised bird names are used. Older Southern African names as well as the Afrikaans names are given in brackets at the end of the text. This pocket-guide is a compact but well illustrated identification booklet that many birdwatchers will find indispensable.
