About Le Roux and Müller's Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of Namibia

The plants in Le Roux and Müller's Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of Namibia have been arranged phylogenetically within families and genera. This means that closely related plants are grouped together, from those regarded as more primitive to those thought to be most advanced. Species within a genus are alphabetic. Where useful, a brief discussion on the family or genus has been provided, along with keys to genera and species. Characteristics common to all members of a family or genus are usually omitted from the individual species descriptions. An overall key, often to family level, is provided on p. xxv with an explanation of how to use this key (p. xxiv), for those not familiar with botanical keys, as well as hints on how to identify plants on p. xv. Species descriptions have been kept relatively concise and, as far as possible, photos have been included for every aspect of each species. In a number of groups, for example Albizia, Acacia and Commiphora, photos of the bark are grouped together for ease of comparison. (The initials of the photographer have been included below each photograph. See below for a list of photographers). Diagnostic characteristics are highlighted in bold print. Some information is provided on habitat, ecology and uses. For those unfamiliar with the terms used, an illustrated glossary has been provided on p. xvii and p. xxi. Due to space constraints, not all common names have been included in the text. As many as possible have been included in the index and the list of common names at the back of the book on p. 517.

The list may be downloaded from the Namibia Biodiversity Database Website:

The maps provide a broad indication of presently known distribution. Appendix 1 on p. 498 gives brief descriptions of some additional species recorded from Namibia. When available, photos have been included. Naturalised alien species are covered in Appendix 2 on p.

Introduction

It was during the period of the Namibian Tree Atlas Project (Curtis & Mannheimer 2005) that Macmillan Education Namibia Publishers approached Coleen Mannheimer and Barbara Curtis with a proposal that they bring this book to fruition by editing and updating the taxonomy, distribution maps and text (including the keys), adding more of the common shrubs as well as any tree species that had been recorded in the country subsequent to the writing of the manuscript, adding brief family and genus descriptions, and completing the photo set. This has now been largely achieved. Over 100 species were added, a new key to families was constructed and many of the other keys were rewritten. Due partly to the deterioration of many of M.A.N. Müller and Willy Giess's slides with age, and the availability of digital images, the vast majority of the photographs are now new, with many of the original images being replaced and a great number being added. Updated distribution maps were generated based on those in the Tree Atlas of Namibia (Curtis & Mannheimer 2005) and from collecting records in the specimen database of the National Herbarium of Namibia. The staff of the National Botanical Research Institute, Windhoek, helped immensely to facilitate the updating and expansion of this book. To assist users, a section giving hints on how to identify species was also written by the editors. [...]
