Professor Francis Wilson lehrte über vierzig Jahre das Fach Volkswirtschaft an der University of Cape Town in Südafrika. Der Gründer der South African Labour & Development Research Unit (SALDRU) hat zahlreiche Schriften über Volkswirtschaft veröffentlicht, darunter Labour in the South African Gold Mines 1911–1969, (Cambridge 1972), South Africa: The Cordoned Heart (Cape Town 1986) und Uprooting Poverty: The South African Challenge, (Cape Town 1989). Francis Wilson leitete 1984 das Second Carnegie Inquiry into Poverty and Development in Southern Africa und war Ratsvorsitzender der University of Fort Hare sowie Vorsitzender des National Water Advisory Council.
