Dirk Schmidt

The Great White shark has suffered negative media publicity for many years, and unfortunately become one of the most maligned, misunderstood and even hated animals on our fragile planet. A sad connotation that surrounded us during our youth was that 'The only good shark is a dead shark' strongly brought to bear from movies such as Jaws. Fortunately this is changing, as conservationists, marine scientists and shark enthusiasts constantly study and learn more about this magnificent, mysterious and supreme predator. In my opinion it is time that a new aspect of shark behaviour is brought about, one that challenges old, dogmatic approaches to sharks, and sets new hypotheses that stretch our perceptions and limited knowledge base surrounding the Great White shark. As a shark operator, and having pioneered shark cage diving in South Africa back in 1992, some of my most exiting results have been observing people's reactions and comments before seeing or coming into contact with these awesome creatures. Monster, £jaws of death', white death are but a few of their thoughts. Generally even after just a few minutes of these sharks coming around the boat, their perceptions change to graceful, awesome, mysterious and beautiful. This supports our aim to introduce people to some of the sharks in our ocean and to educate them by increasing their understanding of our relationship with not only sharks, but all other marine life that inhabit our coastal waters. Diving with White sharks is one of the greatest wildlife experiences a person can have and quickly becomes an all-consuming lifelong passion. This book goes a long way to dispel some of the hype, myth and irrational fear that surrounds these magnificent animals, and as Dirk says, you can only protect and conserve something you understand. His book advances our current limitations in understanding the White sharks and is a welcome and refreshing addition to our knowledge base.
