Namibia. Fascination of Geology, by Nicole Grünert
In this newly edited and expanded fith edition of Namibia - Fascination of Geology, Nicole Grünert gives the necessary basic knowledge in an easy understandable form and describes the geological attractions of Namibia, which can be seen en route.
To include all the geological attractions of Namibia would be beyond the scope of one book. For this reason, only the sites which are of the greatest interest to a wide range of visitors and which are situated on the most frequented and accessible routes are covered. In addition, the selected geological attractions are concentrated mainly in National Parks or publicly accessible parts of the country. This book is essentially aimed at the geologically interested non-professional without a scientific background. The use of technical terms, therefore, has been limited and the description of geological processes is designed to be as pictorial and vivid as possible. Experts and geological scientists should not concern themselves with the simplified presentation. The technical terms used are those that may be of benefit and can be consulted in the geological dictionary in the appendix. This geological guide is intended as a practical handbook for travelling. The explanations of the places of interest, therefore, concentrate only on what the visitor can see at each site covered. Theoretical explanations of features that are not visible have thus been avoided as far as possible. To make the book easier to use under 'bush conditions' every place of interest is described in as much detail as possible, so that it is not necessary to consult other passages in the book. This means that you will find all the essential explanations in the appropriate chapter without having to skim through the rest of the book. Although this improves the manageability of the text, it results in the fact that certain geological events, which are of importance for more than one place of interest, are explained again. This was done to show the connection between individual places of interest in the overall geological processes and thus gives a better understanding to the reader. The individual geological attractions of Namibia have not been caused by any single or isolated phenomena, but can be traced back to a series of fundamental processes that are inter-connected. For a better understanding of the book, the reader should first concentrate on the introductory Chapter 1 (Basics of Geology) and Chapter 2 (Geological Evolution of Namibia). The knowledge the reader gains in these sections will help with understanding the explanations of each site covered in a broader context and without duplication. Apart from the information contained in these two basic chapters, no additional geological background is needed to understand the following chapters. A simplified geological map and legend on the foldout front cover shows the distribution of the geological sequences mentioned in the book. Their chronological order is given in the stratigraphic table (oldest rock units at the base) on the foldout back cover. The detailed maps and exact route descriptions at the beginning of each chapter are intended to ensure that the separate geological attractions are easily located. Due to the multitude of tours possible, isolated places of interest are arranged geographically (Northwest, Northeast, South, West, Central Namibia). These could then be included on the itinerary, depending on the intended direction of travel. (...)
