A Photographic Guide to Sea Fishes of Southern Africa, by Dennis King and Rudy van der Elst
In A Photographic Guide to Sea Fishes of Southern Africa Dennis King and Rudy van der Elst introduce the most common marine fishes in a compact, easy-to-use guide format.
This book has been designed to serve as a companion for anglers, divers and anyone with an interest in marine life. It is intended to be an identification guide as well as a source of natural history and related information. The species have been arranged in a phylogenetic sequence, with the more primitive fishes towards the front and the more evolved species towards the back of the book. Each entry comprises a synopsis of the biological features and unique behaviours of that species, with the most significant distinguishing characteristics set in italics. The scientific and most widely used common names are given, as well as the approximate maximum total length that can be attained, and disc width in the case of stingrays. For those species taken by fishers, an estimated maximum weight is also given. A distribution map is included to highlight the most likely areas where the species may be found. This distribution is an approximation, as fish sometimes move beyond their normal range, depending on local conditions. The maps also draw distinction between inshore species and those that occur over wider continental shelf and ocean areas. Although technical terms have been kept to a minimum, some are unavoidable. The glossary will be helpful in this regard, as well as the anatomical sketches of a bony fish and a shark-like species. Obviously not all southern African fish species are included - so that in some cases the species described serves as a proxy for the family of fishes concerned. For example, out of 25 butterfly fish species found in the region, 10 are described here - enough to provide insight into the entire family of butterfly fishes.
Example: Pike Congers - Muraenesocidae
Muraenesox bagio: 180 cm / 11.6kg. Elongate, scaleless body tapers to a thin tail. A coppery lustre extends down each flank and there are no obvious markings. Has single dorsal and anal fins. Small pelvic fins occur behind each small gill opening. Powerful canines, with a single central row in the upper palate; the teeth lock into cavities in opposite jaws. This aggressive predator can deliver a nasty bite. Matures at 100 cm. Common and wide-ranging, found in estuaries and muddy offshore banks to depths of 75 m, often scavenging on dead fish. Fine eating, often caught by anglers.
