Example: White-winged Tern
Chlildonias Ieucopterus KTU 24 cm

A common migrant, usually seen in non-breeding plumage. Except for the white forehead, the head is grey-black with a dark spot in front of the eyes. The wings and back are grey and rest of body (including rump) is white. Immature is browner than adult with a broad white collar. Best separated from similar Whiskered Tern, C. hybridus, (not illustrated) in flight by white rump and contrasting grey upperparts and wings. Occurs in large flocks on inland lakes, both fresh and alkaline. Aave Richards is an author and photographer who’s first book Birds of Kenya - A Celebration, was published in 1991. Dave also co-authored with his wife, the Globetrotter Guide to Kenya. Dave is a regular contributor of articles and photographs to numerous local and international magazines and books. He is a partner of Ker & Downey Safaris and leads photographic and ornithological safaris, mainly through Kenya and Tanzania, but also to Botswana, Madagascar, Namibia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
