After many years out of print, the Scientific Society of Namibia herewith proudly presents a copy of the original English translation of Dr. Heinrich Vedder's South West Africa in early times.

South West Africa in early times: Being the story of South West Africa up to the date of Maharero's death in 1890, was first published in German in 1934 and published 1938 in this slightly condensed translated form. Heinrich Vedder was born in Germany 1876, trained and ordained as a missionary and immigrated to South West Africa 1903, worked and lived in South West Africa all his life, except for 8 years from 1916 till 1922 when the South African Military administration had him deported. After his return he eventually settled in Okahandja as missionary and teacher trainer. Besides German and Afrikaans, Dr. Vedder spoke fluent Otjiherero, Khoekoe and Oshindonga and spent his whole life teaching, studying and writing about South West Africa and its people. He passed away in 1972, highly respected for his dedicated work and revered by many who had become exceptional teachers under his guidance. Whatever historians and researchers might have learned about the pre-colonial history of Namibia after Heinrich Vedder, credit must be given to him, that he was the first to collect all oral and written material, the records of which are kept in the National Archives, about South West Africa that was available at the time and he painstakingly put it together into the first comprehensive history of the times in South West Africa prior to 1890. We look into the past, to understand the present and guide our way into the future.
