South African Flag Book: The History of South African Flags has been years in the making by Andries P. Burgers. As can be noted from the endnotes to each chapter it is not presented as an original work but rather as a compilation of relevant information culled from other people's hard work.

Andries P. Burgers

The purpose is to bring together within one cover all the widely scattered, and generally inaccessible, material on South African vexillology for the convenience of the general reader. Apart from bringing the incredibly rich vexillological history of South Africa to everyone's attention, the intention is to also provide a convenient source of reference to the public. The purpose of this book is to provide accurate information on the science of flags and on the flags presented, and also to educate readers on the rules of respect associated with the handling of the national flag, the legal implications of using the national flag and the design and registration of flags in general. To complete the picture, chapters on the design of good flags, the country's past and current military flags, those of our neighbours and the flags of international and vexillological organisations are added. The history of flags in South Africa is set against the historical backdrop of the centuries from Dias to Mandela. Flags maybe regarded as colourful milestones on the historical highway of South Africa and have often played a decisive symbolic role. In placing the flags against their historical background, every effort has been made to ensure historical accuracy as provided by the sources consulted and editing by two historians of note. Where any deviations or errors occur, they would be to my account and not that of the sources or editors. The opinions presented and deductions made from the facts are also entirely mine and reflect a very personal view on our country's history. The copyright of this book belongs to the Southern African Vexillological Association (SAVA), but the opinions and deductions presented can in no way be ascribed to SAVA. One of the areas in which I have conducted original research is on the flags used by the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War as set out in Chapter 8. This is an area where, as far as could be ascertained, there has not been a great deal of research undertaken previously and much of the information presented might well be original. One exception, and a primary source and influence for my own research, has been that of Dr Erwin Schmidl of Vienna in Austria. He might well be regarded as a pioneer in this area. What is presented here, however, still barely scratches the surface. It is hoped that this modest compilation may stimulate further research into this fascinating subject. It is Andries P. Burgers opinion that there are at least two Masters, and even possibly a PhD, theses going begging here. The South African Flag Book. The History of South African Flags is, as I mentioned in the beginning, aimed at the general reading public and makes no pretence of being an academic work. I did, however, indicate all the sources from which I gleaned the information and they appear in a list of sources at the end of the book. To make this book as readable as possible, I have grouped the sources in two ways. The sources are listed according to each chapter in which they are referred to and they also appear in a comprehensive list of all the sources that were used, at the end of the book. This book is complete in itself on the subject of the sovereign and related flags, which have flown over South and southern Africa up to the present. [...]
