The Okavango Delta is a unique ecosystem situated in the centre ot the largest stretch of continuous sand in the world, the Kalahari basin. It is situated in Ngamiland in the north-west of Botswana. The Moremi Game Reserve forms part of the Okavango Delta, covering about one third of the area. Moremi is safely buffered by wildlife management areas. These areas are indicated on the map below. Maun is the main town centre of the Okavango and is situated on its southern extremes. At full capacity the Delta can cover as much as 18000 km² but at normal capacity it covers ± 15000 km². The Moremi Game Reserve comprises 4871 km² of this area. October is the hottest month with mean maximum temperatures of 35°C or more (over 40°C at times) and a mean minimum of 20°C. The coldest months are June and July with a mean minimum of 6°C and a mean maximum of 25°C. During the day in winter it is actually quite pleasant and temperatures seldom drop below zero. The peak of the rainy season is January/February but it may start raining in late November up to March. In winter there is no rain. The mean annual rainfall varies between 480mm and 520mm per year. The rainfall is higher in the northern reaches of the Delta. The best time of year is in winter (May to July) as game is more readily seen along permanent water courses. The bird life in the Delta is good in winter and summer, but better in summer. Wet season: The wet season is from November to April but It often only starts to rain in January. In summer it becomes very hot, but not unbearable. October is the hottest month. Serious birders should visit from September onwards up to February when the summer migrants arrive, many of which breed in the Delta. During the rains the plants are spectacular and birds abound. Most animals have their young at this time. The roads become much more of a challenge during the rains. There are daily international flights to Maun from Johannesburg. From there it is possible to fly to any of the camps in the Delta by means of a small aircraft. By road: There are three areas that can be visited by road with privately owned vehicles - the eastern pan-handle, the western pan-handle and Moremi Game Reserve. The rest of the Delta is not accessible by road and consists of private concessions. Maun can be reached by tarred road but the road from Maun north to Moremi is not tarred, only for the first 40km. Take note that all off-road driving In Botswana requires a 4x4. If you do not have a 4x4, it is possible to drive up to Maun, leave your vehicle there and join a mobile safari company. Contact details for these companies are provided below. It is possible to reach many of the camps along the western Panhandle by saloon car. From there one can do fishing, boat rides and mokoro trips. The lodges offer boat trips, mokoro trips, walking and night drives in some cases. Keep in mind that the lodges nside Moremi does not offer walking, night drives or fishing as they have to abide by the reserve rules but some do offer boat rides. Some specialist camps offer elephant rides (Abu Camp), elephant interaction activities (Stanley's Camp) and horse-riding. For the self-driving public it is possible to do boat trips from Xakanaxa Boat Station or Mboma Boat Station, both Inside Moremi. It Is also possible to do boat trips, mokoro trips and fishing from the various camps along the pan-handle. (...)
