Gary Cotterell describes South Africas northern Province in 'The Best of Gauteng' published by Globetrotter.

Example: Dinokeng

The name Dinokeng comes from the languages of the Tswana and Pedi people who traditionally lived in the area. Meaning ‘a place of rivers’, the region lies in the catchment area of two rivers that feed into the Olifants and Limpopo rivers. In African culture, river sources have sacred significance and their confluences are believed to hold great healing powers. Covering an area of 281,000ha (694,000 acres), the grasslands of Dinokeng support an abundance of indigenous wildlife such as zebra, hyena, giraffe, buffalo and eland across five provincial nature reserves and a number of conservancies. Situated close to water, grassland and bushveld, the area attracts a wide variety of birds and is one of South Africa’s prime bird-watching areas. For the outdoor-adventure types there are activities such as vehicle-based game viewing, archaeology trails, hiking, mountain hiking, hunting and fishing in dugout canoes. For those who enjoy a more relaxed holiday, the local villages offer tea gardens, restaurants, pubs and shopping. The charming Victorian village of Cullinan, named after prospector and entrepreneur Thomas Cullinan, features the original miners’ cottages, station and trading centre buildings. The tree-lined avenues flank charming guesthouses, a host of eateries and arts and antique shops. Apart from the many historic buildings in the region, such as the Sammy Marks Museum (see page 33), visitors can also explore traditional African farming and medicine, or join cattle herders and herbalists on interpretive walks.
