South Africa (Medium-Hoberman), by Gerald Hoberman
Gerald Hoberman's South Africa, in a medium sized format, beautifully designed, printed and bound, is a must for all those with an interest in this remarkable country on the southern tip of Africa.
Namaqualand Flowershow
In Namaqualand, it enough rain has fallen in winter, spring ushers in a family of plants known as rygies. They carpet this arid region from plain to mountain in one of the most spectacular flower shows on earth. It is a wonder the\ grow at all: the soil is sandy, rain is sparse and winds are cruel. Travel writer TV Bulpin once wrote that it was a mystery win the flowering plants do not simply pull Lip their roots, pack their seeds in their little portmanteaus and head for places where the air is cool, the soil rich, the streams brimming with pure, sweet water and the rain falls in lovely big drops. But they do not and we are the richer for it.
Free Statefields
The Free State is part of a vast inland prairie. In places it is so Hat and the road so straight that the only visual distractions are tumbleweeds and huge weaver-bird nests. Endless maize fields seem to disappear over the horizon. Towards the north of the country's central flatlands, the golden fields disappear and scrubby plants give way to barren hills and quiver trees. The landscape revives again along the Orange River, where its banks are greened by vineyards, citrus trees and date palms.
The Karoo System
The Karoo System, which covers about two-thirds of South Africa, is a deposit of deep sediments and it's still something of a mystery where all the material came from. The beds were laid down between 250 and 150 million years ago when swamps, lakes and immense forests covered the area. Beneath the quiet valleys of the Karoo are three distinct layers. Near the bottom lies the Ecca Series, rich in plant fossils and coal. [...]
Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Over millions of years, the elements have sculpted the sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park into deformations. At dusk they glow a rich gold competing, in autumn, with the poplars that line the river banks. These grassy plateaux and incised valleys are part of the Drakensberg range, but the terracotta sandstone here is softer and tends to erode more quickly, creating spectacular cliffs and overhangs. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park was proclaimed for its outstanding natural beauty in 1963, but among the towering cliffs can be found zebra, eland, mountain reedbuck and black wildebeest. Hiking through the park's serene, silent buttresses is pure joy and one can find great caverns and rock shelters beneath the beetling cliffs, while animals ruminate contentedly in the grassy valleys.
