Example: The Shell Tourist Map of Okavango Delta and Linyanti

The Linyanti area is one of the best wildlife destinations in Botswana, equal to the Okavango Delta, especially during the dry season when the permanent water of the Kwando and Linyanti rivers attract vast numbers of game. Linyanti constitutes a variety of habitat types -the Linyanti swamps, Riparian forest, lagoons, Mopane veld and sandveld - each of which attract certain animals and birds, ensuring a complete wildlife experience. However, for campers the game-drive area is limited to only about 10km along the river. Keep in mind that it is a difficult area to access but it is ideal for the more adventurous visitor. To enjoy the area fully, it is probably advisable to book in at one of the wildlife lodges outside the park. Although the area consists of concessions, two of the companies operating in the area will allow visitors to drive to their camps - Okavango Wilderness Safaris and Linyanti Explorations. They will supply you with a detailed map of how to get to the lodge. It is not allowed for self-drivers staying in the public camp to do game drives in the concessions. Safety: Elephants You will be fairly safe by following the golden rule: always give elephants the right of way! Never use your hooter or rev the engine, as that makes them more aggressive. Hyaenas can become very bold in the camping sites. Do not feed them. Be aware that they will grab food from the table the minute you turn your back. Never leave dirty dishes, cooler boxes, shoes, bags, rubbish, clothes or any valuables outside at night, because they may well run off with it. They may attack small children. Baboons and monkeys: Do not ever feed them. Be very aware of their presence because they are bold and will grab anything that vaguely resemble food. Do not leave a camera or binoculars because they sometimes grab and damage it. They know how to open tents (mostly baboons), so it is advisable to tie the zips with tie-downs. Honey badgers: They are common camp visitors at Savute and have been known to jump on the cars to inspect the roofrack. Walking: If you are far from the ablutions in the camping site, it is safer to drive because of elephants, buffalo, hippos, lion and leopard. Children: Do not ever allow your children to wonder away from camp on their own. If older children sleep in their own tent, make very sure the doors are properly closed. Children of 8 and younger must never sleep on their own.
