In 2005 Adrian Bailey and Robyn Keene-Young approached their editor at Getaway Magazin, David Bristow, with a proposal to put together a series on Africa's ecosystems. The idea was received enthusiastically and, after the usual bit of haggling, we set about putting together the travel arrangements, now with a deadline suddenly looming. The features were published over the course of a year - from August 2005. Safari: Journeys through Wild Africa is the product of the 43 days spent on assignment for that series, with one important difference - space. Magazine editors face the daunting task of juggling editorial and commercial space, as well as finding the right balance in each issue. This is something that constantly frustrates us, as the take from an assignment is usually so much more than can fit into the four spreads of a Standard South African magazine feature. But in this book, we have the freedom of 224 pages to reveal more of our journeys, to describe more experiences and to show you more images. Each chapter consists of two parts: Getting There, a record of the delights and trials of travel to our destination, with images mostly shot directly from our moving transport; and Being There, documenting the time spent in each region. There is one further distinction between this work and others. After our first few days in the Serengeti, we knew that if we continued exploring each ecosystem from the seat of a 4x4, we wouldn't achieve much intellectually or spiritually. So we decided that from that point on, where possible, we would leave the prosaic comfort of a motor vehicle and shoot each story on foot, or at the very least, under our own muscle power. We hope this self-imposed exposure shows you a more intimate view of this wilderness. This is Africa, unplugged.
