Fritz Fourie was Chief Information Officer in the Kruger National Park from 1969 to 1977. This book compiles visitor's specific questions and the answers the seasoned officer gave them.

Knowledge creates awareness, appreciation and respect. These, in turn, form the cornerstones of an environmental ethic. Creating and establishing an environmental ethic is exactly what national parks are all about. In fact, in conformation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), our own Protected Areas Act prescribes that a national park is created to provide 'spiritual, scientific, educational, recreational and tourism opportunities which are environmentally compatible'. The Kruger National Park is not only the flagship of our South African national parks, but also enjoys iconic status on an international scale. More than a million visitors, local and from abroad, pass through the park annually and are intrigued by its amazing diversity of landscapes, and plant and animal life. It is home to the full suite of Africa's large carnivores, 18 species of antelope in addition to African elephant, black and white rhinoceros, giraffe and hippopotamus. It also accommodates 119 species of reptiles, 35 amphibians, more than 500 birds and a myriad insects. As more and more guidebooks on all aspects of the environment become available, people are becoming ever more aware of the wonders and intricacies of the natural world. Of all the guidebooks, Questions and Answers by the late Fritz Fourie has steadfastly held its place as one of the 'evergreens'. Fritz spent many years in the Kruger Park, progressing through the ranks of the Information Section and, ultimately, to head of the Section. His enthusiasm for his work, the huge base of knowledge that he acquired over the years and his relaxed and endearing interaction with literally thousands of visitors all richly contributed to the high standard and success of this publication. The easy, laid-back fashion in which Questions and Answers is written has made it a highly entertaining companion in the vehicles of a growing following of Kruger Park enthusiasts. Accessible to young children and equally informative to adults, Questions and Answers ideally blends leisure and education and has played a major role towards the core goal of 'spiritual, scientific, educational and recreational' enrichment offered by our national parks. It is my sincere wish that this book will continue to do so for many years to come. (...)
