A trip to the Karoo, Namaqualand and Kalahari is ideally suited to the explorer, those souls tired of humdrum routine, who want to break out and investigate a wide range of experiences, discovering small but fascinating facts about - and in - out-of-the-way places, and taking detours along the way. You'll get the most out of this book if you're a traveller rather than a tourist, and a participant rather than a spectator; however, the area covered here is so vast and so diverse that it holds something for everyone. In essence, it's for people who want to expand their world, and ours has certainly expanded in the years we've been living in the Karoo. There are many interpretations as to where the precise boundaries of the Great Karoo start and end. Where exactly does it fade into the arid savanna of the Kalahari to the north, the grasslands to the northeast, and the thicket biome to the southeast? As far as we could establish, there is no exact line. So, for the purposes of this book, we have in some cases stretched the invisible boundaries to include, for example, the city of Kimberley, which is the main gateway to the region from the north. In fact, we have had much the same approach regarding Namaqualand and the Kalahari, both of which fall within the borders of the Northern Cape. And why? In order to provide a compact and informative guide to the lesser-known areas of South Africa's arid zone and the wonders it holds. Having said that, this does not promise to be a totally comprehensive guide - the area is so big that, unfortunately, it's impossible to include every activity, attraction, and accommodation option. Instead, we've taken a dollop of highlights, a helping of interesting facts, a spoonful of warnings, a pinch of salt, and a ton of contacts, and created a recipe that will satisfy a range of appetites.
