Derived from an old Longman publication on bird watching and identification in southern Africa, Basic Bird ID in southern Africa by Peter Ginn and Geoff McIlleron focuses on the essence of how to go about identifying birds.

Peter Ginn  Geoff McIlleron

Over the last five decades Peter Ginn has spent an enormous amount of time showing beginners how to get started in bird watching. This book distils that experience into a single volume, providing the beginner with a basic and relatively simple system of identification. There is no magic formula, but if you learn the basics presented here you will be able to identify most of the birds in your garden and neighbourhood, and then further afield. Worldwide, bird watching has become a popular outdoor activity. Many birders are now doing more than just identifying birds, they are also observing bird habits and habitat, feeding and breeding behaviour, distribution, etc. At the same time the advent of digital cameras has made photographing birds relatively simple so that even beginners can take good photographs, enabling them to identify birds later at home and also providing a record of species they have seen. Here in southern Africa birders have an outstanding range of field guides to choose from, for example, 'Newman's Birds' and 'Sasol Birds', and reference books such as 'Roberts Birds' and The Complete Guide to Southern African Birds. But these books do not teach the beginner how to identify birds. This volume is designed to fill the gap and enable anyone to learn basic bird identification in their home area, even if they do not have an expert birder to help them. It does not attempt to illustrate or discuss all southern African bird species, nor does it illustrate all the variation found in local birds. For reasons of simplicity and so as not to confuse the beginner, it focuses on the distinctive and more common families and makes only passing reference to difficult families like the pipits, larks, cisticolas, warblers and those in the wader group.
