Abygale Aardvark and her Wildlife Friends, by Lynn Hurry. Who are we but the stories we share and tell?
Our stories become our lives and help us understand and cope with a fast moving world that increasingly appears to be at risk. Sometimes our stories show a disconnection as we fail to see or understand each other and mutual respect declines. This is so sad because being human gives us that chance to connect with each other, to learn together, to grow together and this helps us to proceed more happily on our life's journeys. At other times our stories reflect just how low the candle of humanity can burn before it re-ignites the eternal flame that burns within us all! Lynn Hurry has been telling, writing and sharing connecting stories his whole life. His stories represent the supreme connecting in a world of disconnect. Not only do his stories help people connect with each other but they enable all people to connect with the nourishing, life-giving nature that supports us all. Lynn's stories build understandings within each of us - young and old alike - about animals and the environments in which they live. They portray a world of possibilities and inspiration where creatures learn about each other, coming to understand how each behaves and, as a result, how they may act in support of each other, working towards nourishing rather than depleting nature. The stories are noteworthy for us human creatures reflecting as they do the message of the Ahmedabad Declaration on Environmental Education, India 2007, which reads: "Our vision is a world in which our work and lifestyles contribute to the well-being of all life on Earth".
Dr Jim Taylor, Director of Environmental Education: WESSA (1994-2019)
Abygale Aardvark's home is a comfy den, lined with soft mosses and green ferns, below a huge yellowwood tree in an open patch of the Dukuduku Forest. Outside her den, lying back on a bed of grass, Abygale Aardvark loves to look up through the leafy green branches of the forest into a bright blue sky the colour of a duck's egg, whilst at night she can see the stars fill the pitch black South African sky with millions of tiny crackles of light. And while she lies and looks, Abygale Aardvark always tries to listen and learn from the world around her. And because she looks and listens carefully she knows more about the animals and plants in Africa than most others. And because she knows how important conservation is, she and her friends have started the LUCAFTA conservation action group - a name which comes from their mission in life, to: LOOK UP TO AND CARE FOR ANIMALS FOR TOMORROW AND ALWAYS! After you've read these fascinating facts about our wonderful wild animals, we hope that you and your friends will start your own LUCAFTA club. After all it's YOU that can make a difference! At the back of this book, Abygale Aardvark and her Wildlife Friends, you will find some tips on badge-making. All you have to do is to make your own badge out of cardboard and wear it as often as possible. This way people will know that you are doing what you can to look after Africa's wonderful wildlife.
