Der 1943 in Kapstadt geborene Gerald Hoberman erhielt seine fotografische Ausbildung in London während der späten 1960er Jahre und betrieb, bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Südafrika, ein Fotostudio und -labor in der Carnaby Street. In Kapstadt stieg er in das elterliche Unternehmen ein und war dort bis zum Verkauf des Betriebes im Jahr 1996, als Direktor tätig. 1999 gründete er, zusammen mit seinem Sohn, den Verlag Gerald & Marc Hoberman Collection, in dem bis heute über 75 Fotobände erschienen. Seine Fotografien sind in einer Vielzahl von Medien und Magazinen wie Geo, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Connoisseur und The Daily Telegraph veröffentlicht worden. Darüber hinaus wurde er regelmäßig für Organisationen wie The Historic Royal Palaces verpflichtet und war Mitglied der Royal Society of Arts, der Royal Numismatic Society und der South African Numismatic Society. Schon vor seinem Tod am 21.12.2013, war sein Sohn Marc Hoberman ist in seine Fußstapfen getreten und ist, nachdem er lange Jahre Direktor des britischen Zweigs der Hoberman Collection gewesen war, nun für den gesamten Verlag verantwortlich.
