About: Wildlife of Namibia. A Photographic Guide

Wildlife of Namibia: A Photographic Guide is a compact guide to the rich biodiversity of Namibia, presenting those common mammals, birds, reptiles, invertebrates and plants most likely to be seen on safari by the general visitor. Greater emphasis has been placed on birds, flora and mammals, as they are the groups that are of interest to most visitors, and are usually more conspicuous. Reptiles and invertebrates are more elusive, frequently have restricted ranges, and are often associated with rainfall, which may be very irregular in many parts of Namibia, and are, therefore, much harder to find unless one looks for them specifically.

Each section begins with a brief summary of the group's diversity in Namibia, with emphasis on the endemic, rare and/or threatened species, the overall threats they face and relevant conservation efforts. Individual species accounts are necessarily concise, focusing on the main features that will facilitate identification in the field. For similar species, emphasis is placed on distinguishing features. Unless otherwise mentioned, the sexes, and breeding and non-breeding adults are similar. Size comparisons always refer to similar species; thus a 'small' eagle will still be much larger than a large' wader.

The accounts also provide information on size, habitat, and status, as well as interesting facts about behaviour, and the best viewing locations. Species are arranged in taxonomic order, so that related species are placed together. Scientific and common names follow the currently most widely accepted classifications. Where changes at genus level are recent, the former name is given in parentheses. Wildlife of Namibia: A Photographic Guide is by no means a comprehensive field guide, but is intended to serve as a portable travel companion, helping visitors to the region's parks and other wildlife areas identify the animals and plants they encounter.
