About: Wildlife of Botswana. A Photographic Guide

Wildlife of Botswana - A Photographic Guide is a compact guide to the rich biodiversity of Botswana, presenting those mammals, birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and plants that the general visitor is most likely to see on safari. Greater emphasis has been placed on birds, mammals and flora, as they are usually more conspicuous and are of more interest to most visitors. Reptiles and invertebrates are more elusive, frequently have narrow ranges, and are usually associated with rainfall - which may be very irregular in the arid expanses of the Kalahari.

They are, therefore, much harder to find unless one looks for them specifically. A few uncommon species, such as the Puku and Schalow's Turaco, have been included because they reach the southernmost limit of their distribution in the northeastern corner of Botswana, and occur nowhere else in southern Africa. Each section begins with a summary of the group's diversity in Botswana, with information about endemic, rare and/or threatened species, the overall threats they face and relevant conservation efforts. Individual species accounts are necessarily concise, focusing on the main features that will facilitate identification in the field.

For similar species, emphasis is placed on distinguishing features. Unless otherwise mentioned, the sexes, and breeding and non-breeding adults are similar. Size comparisons always refer to similar species; thus a 'small' eagle will still be much larger than a large' wader. The accounts also provide brief information on size, habitat and status, as well as interesting facts about behaviour and the best viewing locations. Species are arranged in taxonomic order, so that related species are placed together. Scientific and common names follow the currently most widely accepted classifications.

Nikos Petrou is a wildlife photographer and author, and is very active in nature conservation. He has written or co-authored 17 books, including Wildlife of Namibia and An Expert's Guide to Finding the Animals in Etosha, and has produced numerous articles on wildlife and environmental issues.

Neil MacLeod, founder of SafariWise, is a safari guide who specialises in birdwatching and photography. He has extensive and intimate knowledge of the region's flora, fauna and habitats, and of the best locations to find wildlife. He is coauthor of Wildlife of Namibia and An Expert's Guide to Finding the Animals in Etosha.
