Description:

This guide, Touring Sesriem and Sossusvlei, is intended to make your visit more enjoyable and rewarding. By knowing something of the plants and animals that live in its sun baked vastness, its history, geology and ecology, we hope to make you aware of the many wonders to be seen in a small part of the Namib. We have only touched on some of the aspects of natural history and events past and present that have shaped this land. Perhaps you will want to protect the Namib for future generations, to marvel at the spectacular sights, the huge dunes and stately camel thorn trees, while experiencing the peace and tranquillity of the desert away from the hubbub of modern life. The Namib-Naukluft Park, one of the biggest Game Reserves in southern Africa, grew to its present size over a period of 90 years, the first area to be set aside for conservation was the gravel plain south of the Swakop River. To the west it bordered on the Walvis Bay enclave, then British territory. The southern border was south of the Kuiseb River and about as far east as the present day Namib Research Institute at Gobabeb.
