Author J. P. (Koos) Roux died just before completing the manuscript of The lycopods and ferns of the Drakensberg and Lesotho. His death deprived Southern Africa of its sole professional pteridologist. This work was at such an advanced stage of completion and of such value to those interested in ferns that John Manning undertook to assess the possibility that it could be published posthumously. He was relieved to discover that Koos had left matters in such a fine state that publication was indeed possible with relatively little further editing. Any unresolved issues are of a minor nature in relation to the significance of the project and the reader is asked to accept them in that light. The account includes one new species, Isoetes aumulans J. P. Roux, and two new combinations, Pteridaceae subfam. Pteridoideae J.P. Roux and Dryopteridaceae subfam. Elaphoglossoideae (Pic.Serm.) J. P. Roux. The lycopods and ferns of the Drakensberg and Lesotho is the most comprehensive account of the native and naturalised lycopod and fern species occurring in the Drakensberg and Lesotho region.
