About: Tears over the Deserts

Tears over the Deserts is the story of one of Namibia's leading musician, Jackson Muningandu Kaujeua. It is an account of his early life, the influence on him and the development of his interest in music. It is a fascinating read, an expose of the colonial society in which Jackson grew up, the arbitrary rules that dictated where people could live and study, the mistreatment of people by the authorities, and the struggle to find new opportunities, which led him to leave the country.
Jackson Kaujeua's journey into exile took him to the UK in the mid-seventies (he was one of the first Namibian students there), to Angola and to Sweden. He was long away from Namibia but he carried his country with him in his heart and soul, and put that into his music.

Jackson Kaujeua was one of the leading musicians of SWAPO during the years of exile and has continued to be one of our leading musicians since Independence, holding true to his own style of music but adapting and developing with the times and becoming a true professional. He has put the intensity of the liberation struggle into his music. He has put personal stories and the intensity of romance into his music. Jackson Kaujeua's middle name - Muningandu - aptly means the lucky one. His resilience and humour have served him well as he has followed the difficult path of a musician in a small society, and they come through in his book as well. It is very good to see Tears over the Deserts republished and we hope that it will be followed by a further volume*.

* Sadly this did not happen as Jackson Kaujeua passed away a year later, in 2010
