On Sunday afternoon he walks from their apartment to Hampstead Heath. Usually Monica comes along to watch him play touch rugby, but earlier today she and a couple of her Czech girlfriends went to some or other new exhibition at the British Museum. An institution he knows well - he worked there as a security guard for a while when he first came to London a decade ago in search of his ex-wife. So far it has been a good weekend. Friday was a bank holiday and Monica and he rented a car and drove out to the West Country stopping along the way for a long lunch at a cosy pub in a small Somerset village. On Friday night they stayed over in a cheap bed-and-breakfast in Bath. Their room smelled musty but the landlady was friendly and their bed comfortable, and they made love in the evening before going out for dinner and on Saturday morning they strolled through the old spa town with the crowds of other weekend visitors taking in the sights and browsing the curio shops. The whole of Saturday he felt content, a state of mind he doesn't often have these days. His mood survived the tedious return journey in the heavy Saturday-afternoon traffic, even when they crossed the London ring road and merged with the stream of vehicles flowing sluggishly past the grey terraced houses and broken-windowed warehouses bordering the North Circular carriageway.
