About: Road Tripping South Africa (MapStudio)

MapStudio's Road Tripping South Africa is a selection of 20 great South African road trips. They traverse the country from north to south, east to west, but are by no means comprehensive. Rather, Fiona McIntosh and her fellow contributors have chosen some iconic routes that take you to places that you might otherwise never visit. The two things that all the routes have in common are that they follow back roads wherever possible, and that they are all perfectly manageable in a normal sedan. Sure, you might have to drive carefully on occasion but you certainly don't need a 4x4. Like slow food, slow travelling is an immersion, resulting in a very different level of satisfaction. The authors hope that these suggested routes will be the inspiration you need to hop into the car and discover back roads that you've never journeyed before.

Researching this Road Tripping South Africa they started exploring. Suddenly they saw landscapes that they knew so well with fresh eyes: the incredible rock formations; lofty peaks; orderly vineyards and orchards; little flowers that lined the roadways; the state of the farms and smallholdings. The authors, among them Fiona McIntosh, started to notice the seasonal changes, the condition of the roads, the quirky signs, the picnic spots and viewpoints; little things that they'd previously sped past. Best of all, most stopped and chatted to the people that they met along the way, the watermelon sellers, owners of the farm stalls, the craftsmen and women and the enthusiastic staff in the tourism offices. And fell in love with road tripping.
