About: Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2019

Platter’s South African Wine Guide is one of the few wine guides in the world that aims to taste and rate every wine from every South African vintage, and it's been doing so since 1980. In this endeavour, Platter's uses two judging methods: label-sighted assessment as well as blind tasting (with no label showing). As Platter's is primarily a wine guide and not a wine competition, our expert tasters initially assess the wines sighted to have access to vital contextual details such as site, climate and style. Since Platter's not only rates wines, but also provides rich editorial content, this information enables our team to understand (and editorialise) the intent of the producer and the wine's backstory. Our ratings are the considered opinion of wine experts who understand the responsibility of adducing a star rating to a product as changeable as wine. However, because of the subjective element associated with wine assessment, we strongly recommend you view our rankings as adjuncts to the tasting notes rather than as oracular pronouncements. And we continue to urge you, in the words of a local winery's marketing slogan, to trust your taste!
