Description:

This year Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2015 contains info on more than 7000 wines from 961 producers, merchants and brands, to ensure that you are never at a loss for a well-informed choice. Andrew McDowall, who succeeded the guide's co-founder John Platter as publisher in 1998, retired last November and passed the reins to wlne-and-food man Jean-Pierre Rossouw. Under his baton a number of improvements have been introduced for this, the 35th edition, notably a revamped logo and cover design; crisper page layouts with larger, more legible type; stricter good-value parameters, and a new Hidden Gem category, highlighting a limited number of wines especially worthy of note, interesting, attractive, unusual, unique, representative of an important trend etc.

Unchanged are our aim and approach, namely to taste, rate and describe as many as possible South African-made wines available during the currency of the book, both locally and overseas. Much as we'd like to, the number of Individual wines precludes us from re-tasting/rating vintages which have been submitted previously yet will still be available for sale during the book's currency. Only wines which last year were reviewed as tank or barrel samples, and thus rated provisionally (or considered too young and unformed to rate), or wines we believe we may have miscalled last time, are revisited for the current book. New and previously untasted vintages are, of course, reviewed as normal.
